How to keep your leather seats looking brand new

When you purchase a new car, everything looks bright and shiny. Whether it is fresh paint, the shiny windscreen, the bounciness on the new tires or the smell of new leather seats, it all make you feel special. But as time goes by, this novelty starts to go away and you are left wondering what you can do to revive it, especially the leather seats, which seem to deteriorate at a very fast pace.

How to keep your leather seats looking brand new

Given below are a few tips and tricks to help you maintain your car seats and keep them looking as fresh as possible.

  • Avoid the sun. If the vehicle needs to be parked out, use a sunshield or tints to protect the seats.
  • Be careful of what you place on the seats. Very sharp or heavy items can cause damage to the seats.
  • Check to see if you have any perforated areas on the seat. If you do then keep water and other substances away from that area to avoid clogging.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to get the dust and dirt from nooks and crannies. Be careful not to scratch the leather in the process. You can also use a blower to blow away the dust.
  • Over time, leather can collect grime and dust and it is not necessarily seen by the naked eye. Use a microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution meant for leather to wipe the surface area of your seats.
  • Use a brush to gently scrub your seats and wipe off with a microfiber cloth.
  • Condition your leather seats with a good pH balanced, water based leather conditioner.
  • Once the conditioner settles in, use a microfiber cloth to buff in the conditioner and remove any excess product.
  • Clean your seats regularly. Don’t let dirt and grime accumulate over the seats as this will damage the leather over time.
  • Park your vehicle in a shady spot or inside a garage whenever you can. This will prolong the life of the leather, preventing it from drying out too fast.
  • Use a moisturizer with lanolin oil in it as this keeps the leather supple and younger for longer.
  • Avoid cleaners with petroleum jelly or silicone as they will leave a shine and are also greasy.
  • If the leather does crack, use a leather repair kit to fix it as soon as possible.
