The possibility of upgrades to future operating systems for free was one of the biggest advantages of the Surface Pro. The Surface and Surface 2 had Windows RT operating systems and ARM-based processors. These devices had stiff competition from other tablets and Apple iPad.

In May 2014, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 was presented at an event in New York. For the first time, Microsoft had offered the pre-booking for the Surface Pro 3 two days after the announcement. One month later, in June, the device was released in the country. Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is a full-fledged PC with its Windows 8 OS and Intel CPU.

The body of the Surface Pro 3 has a gray matte finish due to the magnesium alloy used for making the back of the device. The charger connects to the port securely due to the magnetic effect of the port. Also, an additional feature is the kickstand which holds the device in place and can be set at an angle (between 22 and 150) for convenience. The display size of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is 12- inches and the screen has a 3:2 aspect ratio. This allows comfort in usage in portrait orientation. The processor used for the Surface Pro 3 is 4th Generation Intel Core along with a TPM chip for enterprise security.

In October 2015, the fourth generation Microsoft Surface Pro 4 was announced by Microsoft and it was released later that month in the country. The fourth iteration featured 6th generation Skylake Intel Core processor CPUs as well as more SSD and RAM options, which are available in the following variants: 1024, 512, 256, and 128 GB, and 16, 8 and 4 GB respectively. Also, the display size was increased to 12.3-inches and with a greater resolution at 2736×1824 at 267 PPI and a 10-point multi-touch. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a hybrid liquid cooling system. The outer body was the same as the previous generation. Also, Microsoft retained the kickstand from the previous generation to the Surface Pro 4.
